Founded in 2004, The Hoosier Mountain Bike Association along with volunteers have built more than 100 miles of natural surface sustainable trails for mountain bikers in Central Indiana. HMBA needed help recruiting and communicating with volunteers and securing more annual memberships.
We kicked off the project by writing a traditional communications plan, a new marketing plan, and putting together design elements to pull everything together.
The overall goal of the new design was to allow HMBA to highlight specific news and events relevant to upcoming initiatives. The custom built content management system allows the executive director to create highlights and featured content that drive users to more in depth areas of the website or the blog. Aside from being the face of the organization, the site needed to provide trail riders with useful, up to the minute status on trail conditions.
The entire website was designed for mobile, but the trail guides were designed with mobile use as a primary function. Each trail guide can be easily accessed mobile devices and there are status indicators with separate URLS to keep the payload light for riders on the trail.
One of the major challenges HMBA faced was keeping the trail conditions up to date. Trail stewards were assigned to each trail to make updates daily.
A simple mobile interface was was created for trail stewards that could update trail status on the website in real time. Updates to trail status are auto posted to Twitter and into a Slack channel that the Executive Director and board can monitor. Being a volunteer based organization it was important to try to keep as many people in the loop as possible, especially during inclement weather conditions.
